Atlas Peak Vineyards is within the Atlas Peak Viticultural Area of the Napa Valley. The Atlas Peak Viticultural Area comprises 11,400 acres, and takes its name from the highest point in the Vaca Range of mountains--Atlas Peak--which stands 2,700 feet above sea level atop the eastern slopes of Napa Valley. Though this viticultural area is significant in size, only 565 acres of vineyard are currently planted within its boundaries. The greatest share of these--some 495 acres- are planted at Atlas Peak Vineyards.

Atlas Peak Vineyards occupies an uplifted, hanging valley at an elevation of between 1,450 and 1,800 feet. Both soils and climate of Atlas Peak are distinctive. Volcanic in origin, the soils are very well drained, and responsible for producing grapes with exceptional varietal character. As the vineyards are located well above the coastal fog layer, additional sunshine late in the growing season, balanced by cool afternoon breezes and radiant cooling of the shallow volcanic soils creates a long, slow ripening periods yielding mature fruit rich with varietal character.

The Atlas Peak Vineyards estate is owned by Marchese Piero Antinori, the renowned Italian wine producer whose family has a distinguished history spanning more than 600 years of Italian wine growing. In Italy, Piero Antinori has pioneered modern wine making through the production of what are know as "Super Tuscan" wines--the very highest quality red wines of the region which are largely based on blends of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was Piero Antinori's vision that these outstanding varietals could produce top-quality wines in the unique environment of Atlas Peak Vineyards, which led to the development of the vineyards during the decade of the 1980's. Today, there are approximately 120 acres each of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay planted at Atlas Peak. Atlas Peak Vineyards is the largest grower and producer of Sangiovese in California.

The operation of Atlas Peak Vineyards reflects a long-term agreement between Piero Antinori and The Wine Alliance. Responsible for vineyard production, wine making, brand development, marketing, and sales, The Wine Alliance has since 1990 worked in concert with Piero Antinori to establish Atlas Peak Vineyards as a unique, and fine wine producing estate. With a modern wine making facility that includes more than 35,000 square feet of barrel-aging caves the fixture for Atlas Peak holds great promise. This is substantiated by the critical praised and market success of its Sangiovese, Reserve Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay wines, and of Consenso, the Atlas Peak proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Each of these wines reflect the distinctive vineyard qualities of the estate, and further confirm the status of the Atlas Peak Vineyards as one of the Napa Valley's truly outstanding wine estates.
